Titanium metal in the chemical industry: high strength, corrosion resistance, lightweight

2024-12-02

Since its discovery, titanium metal has always held an important position in the field of chemical engineering. In the past 12 years, the domestic chemical industry has consumed over 15000 tons of titanium annually.

High intensity for greater operational capability
Don't underestimate the all titanium alloy drill rod, its performance is very outstanding. The specific strength of titanium alloy is 3.5 times that of stainless steel, 1.3 times that of aluminum alloy, and 1.6 times that of magnesium alloy. Under the same weight, titanium alloy can withstand greater impact and pressure. At the same time, the tensile strength of titanium alloy is 1.5-2 times that of other alloys, making it safer and more durable in drilling operations, especially suitable for complex well conditions such as ultra deep wells and short radius wells in Northwest Oilfield.
In recent years, with the increasing number of complex structured wells, such as large displacement wells, short radius wells, and old wells with window opening and lateral drilling horizontal wells, the application of conventional drill pipes in these wells has encountered difficulties. Titanium alloy drill rods have become the preferred choice for solving these problems due to their high strength and excellent elasticity. The laboratory has confirmed that when the cyclic stress is between 30000psi-40000psi, the fatigue life of titanium is 10 times that of ordinary steel. Titanium alloy drill rods are also widely used in ultra deep wells and high displacement wells, significantly reducing hook load and torque, and improving the tension margin and safety factor of drilling tools.

More corrosion-resistant, longer operating life
Titanium alloy components play an important role in offshore oil extraction platforms. They can easily resist the corrosion of seawater, sulfuric acid, and petrochemicals, helping oil drilling enter deeper waters and deeper oil wells, including higher temperatures and severely corrosive production environments. In high sulfur gas fields such as Tarim and Sichuan basins in China, titanium alloys have been applied in high sulfur environments due to their excellent pitting corrosion resistance, especially under harsh working conditions and high Cl and H2S content, demonstrating strong corrosion resistance.

Lighter and more flexible operation
Titanium alloy rods are not only more powerful than steel rods, but also lighter. The weight of the same volume is almost half that of steel. This reduces the drilling torque by nearly 50%, and correspondingly reduces the load on the top drive on the ground, making the equipment less prone to damage. Therefore, titanium alloy rods can be more labor-saving, fuel-efficient, and equipment efficient.

In summary, the application of titanium alloys in the chemical industry has multiple advantages such as high strength, corrosion resistance, and lightweight operation. It has become an indispensable preferred material in the chemical industry, providing strong support for oil drilling and chemical production.
