Application of Titanium Alloy in Ocean Engineering

2024-12-09

titanium alloy is widely used in marine engineering, and due to its excellent corrosion resistance, high strength, low density and other characteristics, it has become the preferred material for many marine equipment.

Oil extraction and offshore platforms

titanium alloy
A company in the United States has used seamless titanium alloy pipes to create nearly 500m long vertical shafts for offshore drilling platforms. This type of vertical shaft pipe is lightweight, has high fracture toughness, and long fatigue life, greatly reducing the cost of ballast. Ti-6Al-4V (Gr.5) alloy is the best material for drilling pipes, and its yield strength and fatigue strength are very suitable for drilling applications. In addition, small titanium components such as Titanium Pumps, Titanium Valve, Titanium Fittings, Titanium Fasteners, etc. are widely used on oil extraction platforms.

Harbor architecture

The surface of Titanium Materials has an oxide film with a thickness not exceeding 10nm, which has excellent corrosion resistance to air, seawater, and marine environments. Japan has extensively used titanium materials in marine development projects such as bridges, cross sea roads, airports, and port logistics bases. Titanium not only has excellent anti-corrosion properties, but also is non-toxic and will not pollute the environment.

Coastal power station

The condenser of a coastal power station is a device that utilizes a large amount of seawater. Due to the presence of a large amount of corrosive substances in seawater, traditional condenser materials such as copper alloy tubes are often severely damaged. Titanium has good corrosion resistance in seawater, especially polluted seawater, and is therefore widely used in the manufacture of condensers.

Seawater desalination device

Currently, water scarcity has become a global problem. Desalination of seawater will be an effective method for humans to solve freshwater resources. From the development of seawater desalination both domestically and internationally, there are mainly two methods: distillation and reverse osmosis. Titanium is widely used as a heat transfer tube for heaters in desalination plants due to its excellent resistance to seawater corrosion. By 2004, there were over 15000 seawater desalination plants built or under construction worldwide, with a significant use of Titanium Materials.

Ship

Titanium and its alloys are corrosion-resistant in seawater and marine atmosphere, and with light specific gravity, high strength, impact resistance, non-magnetic, sound permeability, and small expansion coefficient, they are regarded as good ship materials. National navies and the shipbuilding industry also attach great importance to the application of titanium on ships, and have developed many grades of titanium alloys for ships. Titanium is widely used in hull structural parts, deep-sea survey ships and submarines pressure-resistant shells, pipes, valves, rudders and other components.

Ocean thermal energy conversion

The ocean contains enormous thermal energy resources. Equipment made of titanium and its alloys can efficiently convert ocean thermal energy. Due to its excellent corrosion resistance and high strength, titanium is an ideal material for ocean thermal energy conversion systems.

In addition, titanium has been widely used in marine fisheries, such as titanium metal mesh and Titanium Tube heat exchangers used in artificial aquaculture technology.
